Audition Culture
Dance auditions
Dance has the most developed audition culture of any youth sport. The audition is the work — and rejection is the constant. This is a survival guide across every audition type a serious dancer will face.
Audition types
Studio team auditions
Annual auditions for your home studio's competition team. Typically late spring / early summer.
Summer intensive auditions
Regional, traveling, or video auditions for summer training programs. ABT, SAB, Ailey, Joffrey, NYCDA Summer, etc.
College BFA auditions
High commitment. Multiple schools. Audition fall/winter of senior year. Acceptance and scholarship offers spring.
College dance team auditions
Different from BFA. Summer before freshman year typical. Some schools require video first.
Pre-professional auditions
Joffrey trainee, ABT II, Houston Ballet II — competitive pathways into professional companies.
Pro company auditions
Rare for teens. Cattle calls, agent representation pathway, audition reels.
Commercial dance auditions
LA and NY industry. Music videos, tours, commercials, film. Agent representation important.
Theatre / Musical auditions
Equity vs. non-equity calls. National tours. Cruise ship contracts. Often a stepping stone.
What auditions actually feel like
- The waiting (most of the audition is waiting)
- The rejection (and there will be rejection)
- Momentary cuts (some auditions cut every round)
- The decision communications (long wait after audition)
- Coping with hearing "no" from places you wanted
Practical audition essentials
- Audition outfit (clean lines, body visible, no flashy accessories)
- Hair and makeup expectations (varies by audition type)
- Number placement and visibility
- Choreography learning under pressure
- Improv sections
- The interview portion (for some auditions)
Rejection is data, not verdict
Most auditions involve rejection — even for talented dancers. Faculty have preferences, body types, programs have specific needs. A 'no' from one program is information about that program's specific needs that year, not a measurement of your worth as a dancer.
