Dance scholarships

Dance training is expensive — but scholarships exist at almost every level if you know where to look. Here's a guide across convention, intensive, college, and professional pathways.

Convention scholarships

Awarded by convention faculty based on class observation. NUVO Top Talent, JUMP, Radix Core, Tremaine, NYCDA Outstanding Dancer, 24Seven Title, LADM, PULSE Elite Protégé, Adrenaline. Honest framing: most are partial discounts on future registration; few include cash awards. See our Convention Scholarships page for honest detail.

Summer intensive scholarships

Major intensives (ABT, SAB, Joffrey, Ailey, Houston Ballet, BalletMet) offer competitive partial or full scholarships to their summer programs. Application + audition. Highly competitive — but real money when awarded.

College dance team scholarships

College dance teams (UDA/NDA-affiliated) often offer scholarship money through their athletic department or spirit program. Not NCAA-governed (most college dance teams aren't NCAA sports), so scholarship structures vary by institution.

BFA Dance scholarships

BFA dance programs (Juilliard, Tisch NYU, Boston Conservatory at Berklee, Point Park, USC Glorya Kaufman, etc.) offer merit-based scholarships through their admissions process. Audition performance impacts award amount. Need-based aid also typically available.

Pre-professional company trainee scholarships

Some pre-professional companies (Joffrey Academy, ABT II, Houston Ballet II) offer trainee scholarships. Different from a paid contract — typically training plus minimal stipend. Pathway to a professional contract.

Industry / nonprofit scholarships

Industry Dance Awards, Dance Magazine Awards, Dance Teacher Award of Excellence. Various nonprofits offer scholarships for underrepresented dancers in classical ballet specifically. Diversity-focused initiatives are growing.

Application strategy

Apply broadly. Most scholarships are competitive. A dancer's chances of winning ANY scholarship go up significantly with broader applications. Track deadlines in fall of junior/senior year — most fall between January and May.
